Panic Attack.

Claustrophobia often leads to panic attacks. Some of the symptoms of a panic attack are:
  • De-realization (feelings on unreality)
  • Fear of losing control or going insane
  • Paresthesias (tingling sensation)

But seen as panic attacks don't have a specific form I've decided to use angular, sharp shapes to represent them.
Panic attack    -    Tranquil mind

After sketching out the idea I then constructed a 3D piece for the box I made earlier.

When placed in the box it's reflection gives the impression of growth.
Just as panic attacks start off small and then elevate out of control.

Drawings by Eibatova Karina

This is just an artist I came across and really liked. They deal with both Outer Space and Psychical Space.

All in the mind.

'Claustrophobia is typically classified as a mental illness and often results in panic attacks'
I tried to recreate this as an instillation.
I contracted a five sided box out of mirrors, which reflected off one another.
This represents the mind:A confined space from the outside, yet an infinite space on the inside.
I also used a UV bulb to create a more fictitious/dreamlike sense to the space.
I firstly painted the base with UV footprints to show the now expanded path created by the reflections.

Above is a picture of it opened up on it's side.
And here is the finished piece.
 confined appearance.
But when you look in the small window on it's side...
Infinite.

Next, I'm planning on replacing the base with a 3D piece representing Panic Attacks.

Restricted/Free Space.

Quick watercolour that represents the restricted and tied down.
and the other depicting the free and moving.

Some work I've done so far

I decided to go with claustrophobia and to focus on restriction.

3 paintings i did.. but they didnt really create a sense fear or panic.
So I got the negative of the paintings which turned out good

Studies of the senses - sight and touch (hands and eyes)

Watercolour of free space. I'll be doing another one along with it that shows restricted space.

Some other work..
